Day 7: Tuesday, February 4 – Activities from Playa Larga
0630 – Depart on walk to Laguna Salinas (before breakfast!)
We are up with the birds this morning for a walk to see flamingos. After a short walk through town, we meet our coach for a drive through Zapata National Park to the remote lagoon where colonies of these iconic pink wading birds congregate in large numbers.
Turns out the recent weather patterns have forced the flamingos further into the park, so we were only able to see a few.
0945 – Return to our guesthouses in Playa Larga for late breakfast and a rest
1200 – Depart by bus for Playa Girón
Our drive takes us along dreamy Caribbean coastline to Museo Girón for insight into the Bay of Pigs invasion from the Cuban point of view.
1500 – Optional challenge walk in Gran Parque Natural Montemar
On the return journey to Playa Larga, walkers are invited to join us on a trail through a completely different ecosystem, over challenging sections of fossilized coral surfaces to a pair of remote cenotes nestled away in Gran Parque Natural Montemar. Those who opt out will return to our guesthouses where we rendezvous this evening for dinner together.
[Sherry and I decided to skip the walk, because we walked on this kind of surface yesterday afternoon. Instead, we went to the beach, where Sherry took off her shirt and received a massage from a very handsome Cuban man. Yup, right there on the beach. I have some video, but also want to keep my legs and arms intact.]
