Frequently Asked Questions

The sport of walking/volksmarching is open to everyone. To offset fixed expenses, a small fee of $3 is charged to everyone. If we have designed an award for our event, that costs extra.

Everyone can participate, no matter their age. Children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult. My youngest did his first event at the age of six weeks. Of course, I carried him. Darlene is 88 and walks every event. The time limits are set to insure everyone has ample time to complete the event, no matter their physical condition.
The money is used to pay for the fixed expenses for putting on the event, such as maps and marking materials. Additionally, our national office receives a portion of the fee to support the expenses of the administrative functions they provide.
Our sport started in Germany, so our courses are laid out with the distance in Kilometers. Our short course is 10 kilometers. This translates to 6.2 miles. Many of our events also have a mini distance of 5 kilometers. That translates to 3.1 miles. If you are looking at an event with different distances, you can do the conversion here.
Yes. Our National Organization, of which we are a member club, is the American Volkssport Association, Inc. They are headquartered in Universal City, Texas. You can find out information about them at AVA: America's Walking Club.
Sorta. We provide water at the Start/Finish and at checkpoints along the way. Sometimes food and drink will be available for purchase. You should be prepared and bring your own water to carry with you. Additionally, you should generously apply sunscreen, and perhaps bug spray. Dress in layers, wear a hat, bring your gun.
We plan our routes with safety in mind. If crossing a busy street is necessary, we do it in the safest way possible. If we need to go through questionable neighborhoods, we recommend you have your gun with you and know how to use it. If you are not sure you should have a gun, or would like to find out how to use one and if you can handle it, head on over to our partner web site and take some FREE training courses, including Volksmarching in Self Defense".
Absolutely. Our organization is an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and all of your donations are 100% tax deductible. For additional information, please check out our sister charitable organization's donation page at http://FreeHandgunTraining.org.
The event route is provided by us. It will either be marked with AVA tape, or you will receive a map with written directions. To be safe, you must follow our provided route. If there are historical or interesting things along the way, we will try to point them out. Those portions that qualify for one of the AVA Special Programs will be identified with the item that can be recorded in your Special Program book.
Yes. Everyone pays our event fee of $3 prior to departing. Additionally, you will be required to sign a waiver, releasing our club and start/finish area of any liability.
